Healthy finances impacted by the termination of the UnitingCare contract

The CCG (the public body that commissions healthcare from hospitals and other providers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is meeting in public today. An excerpt from one of its papers shows how the termination of the UnitingCare contract that provided healthcare for the over65s across the county continues to have an impact - this time on the CCG's bottom line:
  1. As reported in the Integrated Delivery Report, at Month 8, the CCG was reporting a year to date surplus of £2.7m and on this basis, a year end surplus position of £4m in line with our Financial Plan. However, post 30 November 2015 reporting, the CCG is now facing a material change to our forecast position due to the termination of the UnitingCare contract. An agreement has been reached between the CCG, UnitingCare, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to share the financial consequences of the termination of the contract. This means that the CCG will be revising its forecast from a £4m surplus to a deficit which will be formally reported at month 9. The CCG is now in formal financial recovery and needs to act to minimise the deficit and the impact on the 2016-2017 financial plan. NHS England has requested a Financial Recovery Plan and delivery will be monitored by the Finance and Performance Sub-Committee.
