Grit result

The County Council is cutting back on the number of roads that get gritted each winter, in order to make savings. This was decided by councillors of all political colours, faced with the mounting budget problems. However with the recent cold snap the implications are becoming clearer.

I have been making representations to the highways department, along with whittlesford parish council, and at the moment I am pleased to say that Station Road West is now secured as a secondary route - we will try to get it upgraded to a primary route but realistically this isn't going to be easy.

Whittlesford Station is now described in all the transport literature as a transport hub and is getting busier as the train service is now pretty good. People drive down from the outskirts of Cambridge to park there and the car park that was half empty when I started commuting from the station ten years ago is now full to overflowing...so it has to be gritted.

The other thing that we as a village need to decide is whether we ask local farmers to grit other roads under contract to the parish council, for an agreed sum.

Ssecondary routes are gritted when there is a prolonged period of cold weather when road surface temperatures fall and stay below zero for four days or when snow is forecast.
