Litter pickers assemble!

Both Hinxton and Whittlesford had village litter-picks this weekend, under rather leaden skies. But the turn-out was excellent, with scouts and families all turning out along with parish councillors and volunteers of all types. South Cambs District council provided the bags - and collected them! - and the gloves and pickers, with additional logistical support, safety tabards and bags and more manpower from McDonalds for the Whittlesford pick.
The volume of litter picked up was absolutely astonishing, and these are not untidy villages. The chair of Whittlesford Parish Council, Arthur Greaves, did a sterling job on his 1954 Massey Ferguson tractor collecting the growing piles of filled bags. The dead badger was sensibly left in situ and has been reported to the county council for specialist removal. The volunteers enjoyed coffee and do-nuts afterwards, along with a justified feeling of doing their bit for the community.
