An Act of Remembrance in Whittlesford

This morning saw some 100 people from Whittlesford attend a simple but moving Act of Remembrance at the Parish Church for the village's first fatality of WWI, Private Reginald Andrews.

Today is the centenary of the death of Pte Andrews, who was 21, and who served in the Cambridgeshire Regiment. A eulogy and details of his service history and his life and family back in Whittlesford were presented by Karen Wright, who has been researching the village men who went off to the war.

The event was organised by the Royal British Legion Motorcycle Riders Branch as part of their "Cambs 876 Remembered" project, which aims to pay anniversary tribute at the grave or memorial of each of the 876 Cambs regiment men who gave their lives. Unusually, this young soldier was buried in the village of his origin.

As well as army cadets from Sawston, the Whittlesford and Duxford Scouts attended too, as Pte Andrews had been a keen scout in the earliest days of the Scouts.
