Highways pulls it off!

About a year ago I was asked by the Babraham parish council to see if the long-standing arguments over the safety of a certain roundabout could be looked at and resolved. I took this up with Cambs Highways.
After a year of quite technical research including measuring the surface texture of the so-called spinning roundabout at Babraham on the A1307 the county council highways team have put in place the improvements to the road, and the signs for approaching the roundabout. We all hope that this will reduce the alarming number of spins from cars travelling quite modestly there. There have not been fatalities, but the regularity of the accidents - according to the police who attend these near misses - is such that it could only have been a matter of time. Three weeks back when I was there with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire the very next day a mature student going to Babraham emailed with her alarming experience.
On a more modest scale, the gates at Hinxton ford, when closed, made it difficult for cyclists and people pushing buggies to get round the side of the gates and access the footbridge over the ford. The council, after a bit of time, have made good their promise of sorting this out, and it will be done in time for the rainy season. The excavations are there to be seen - it will improve what is now a very good set of connecting cycle routes in these parts. I can cycle from Whittlesford to Babraham to the Abingtons and back to Duxford and very rarely is this on a road competing with traffic. The bit missing is a link to help people get from Duxford to the rail station at Whittlesford, but more of that anon.
